Google Analytics 4
Introduction
You need a GA account for the Analytics module. If you do not yet have one, you can register here.
Module configuration
Open the Analytics Module screen in the administration under Modules – Google Analytics.
Please activate the module by ticking the checkbox and then copy your MESS-ID from Google Analytics 4 into the module. You can find this in the administration under Data streams in the details of your stream. If you have not yet opened a stream, we recommend that you go through the setup wizard under Administration - Property.
We recommend that you activate e-commerce tracking, advanced e-commerce reports, statistics events and advanced consent mode.
The data is now sent directly to Google Analytics. You can see more detailed data under Monetisation - E-Commerce Purchases.
Set up conversion events
The data collected in Google Analytics is based on events that users trigger when they interact with the online store. With the help of Conversion, you can select certain events that are most important to your business and mark them as conversion events.
Marked conversion events are listed in conversion reports. It can take up to 24 hours before conversions for newly marked events can be seen.
Under Configure - Events, you can see all existing events. To mark an event as a conversion, simply slide the switch to ‘On’. The conversion is then displayed under Configure - Conversions.
If you want to create a new event, you can click on ‘Create Event’ and create any event you like, for example a newsletter event:
Analyse the order process
Under Explore, you have the option to create your own reports. We recommend that you set up a funnel analysis for the order process. This will enable you to interpret possible jumps and take targeted measures, for example, for payment options.
To use the funnel analysis, you must first set up a custom definition so that the order process-specific URLs can be used. You can set up the custom definition under Configure - Custom Definitions as shown in the image below.
Once the custom dimension is configured, you can create the funnel analysis. To do this, open an exploratory funnel analysis under Explore. You can then add the following steps for the order process:
Step | Link-URL |
---|---|
Shopping basket | /shop/checkout/cart |
Login | /shop/checkout/loginRegister |
Checkout | /shop/checkout/view |
Order overview | /shop/checkout/termsAndConditions |
Purchase | /shop/checkout/viewOrderSuccess |
The previously created dimension must now be selected in the condition. The URL can then be entered in the filter. An example can be seen at the bottom of the picture.
Since the customer is not forced to go to the shopping cart before completing a purchase, it is important that the ‘Use open funnel’ option is activated. This highlights the points where customers can enter or leave the process at each step.
Exclude payment providers as referral sources
In the case of a referral access, customers are redirected to the website from another source, automatically triggering a new session. This is also the case if your customers pay via a payment provider (e.g. credit card, Twint, etc.) during the ordering process. To prevent the payment from triggering a new session in the GA4, we recommend that you mark the domain of your payment provider as an unwanted link.
To do this, go to Data streams – Details of the stream – Further tagging settings – List of unwanted links in the administration and create a link there.
The following image shows a link of the payment provider Datatrans:
